India faces major challenges in meeting its energy needs and providing adequate energy in a sustainable manner. Strong economic growth is projected for India (available statistics foresee 5,4% from 2003 to 2030) and much of the increase in the country’s demand for energy, particularly in the industrial and electricity sector, is expected to be met by coal based thermal and hydro-power as the main sources of generating electricity.

 

The global objective of this assignment was to provide a comprehensive study to be carried out at Singrauli Super Thermal Power Station (Distt. Sonebhadra, Uttar Pradesh – NTPC project power site) and Vindyachal Super Thermal Power Station (Madhya Pradesh – NTPC project power site) with a view to support the EU-India policy dialogues in the sector of renovation and modernisation of power plants in India.

 

The specific purpose and objectives of this contract were to provide a comprehensive study to be carried out at Singrauli Super Thermal Power Station (Distt. Sonebhadra, Uttar Pradesh – NTPC project power site) and Vindyachal Super Thermal Power Station (Madhya Pradesh – NTPC project power site) to support EU-India policy dialogues in the sector of renovation and modernisation of power plants in India as outlined in the Technical and Administrative Provisions of the Financing Agreement.

Study on Renovation and Modernisation (R&M)
Provided Services

Description of Provided Services within the Assignment:

 

  • Identification of current international technologies and best practices in the areas of RLA / CA and Retrofitting, up gradation and Life Extension appropriate for the two plants

  • Identification of various R&M options to be considered, such as – stand-alone turbine upgrades, turbine - generator (TG) upgrades, TG and boiler upgrades, etc

  • Identification of optimised R&M options for retrofit of the two power plants along with the time schedule for implementation

  • Bill of Quantity along with possible costs

  • Cost-Benefit Analysis both stand alone and w.r.t. new builds

  • Process mapping for execution of the optimised solution

  • Outline a Technology Roadmap for Future R&M of power plants in India based on current international practices.
